导航网站可以追溯到雅虎公司以及早期的网络黄页（电话黄历）如：马云的中国黄页，后来因为效率更高的全文搜索引擎的兴起而逐渐没落。随着移动互联网的兴起，网络上呈现碎片化、多中心的趋势，单一的搜索引擎无法完全满足用户的使用需求，需要导航网站对专业的网站和内容做一个重新的连接。
